The Use of Jareth's Proper Name

S & H on ladder

From: Stephanie (GMOS) Massick ([email protected])

Did anyone ever notice that nobody mentions the Goblin King's name until Hoggle and Sarah are climbing the ladder and Hoggle says, "I'm a coward and Jareth scares me"? In the book and the script, Jareth introduces himself as "Jareth" but not in the film. How often is his name mentioned, I wonder?

Is that it?

Yeah, I did notice that. Maybe they were trying to keep Jareth mysteriously formal by rarely referring to the familiar address of his first name. Using a person's name historically and symbolically meant that you had power over them, or at least were equal to them. Sarah never says Jareth's name in the movie, does she? I guess the final confrontation would have had even more impact if she had addressed him by name. Ooohh, I just found exactly that in the novel, "You are frightened, Jareth." (You guys don't realize the research that goes into my E-mails! :)

I guess poor Hogwart experienced the exact opposite treatment, with how many times his name was forgotten or mispronounced!
